Spring is the time of year when many of us do a little spring cleaning and organizing. It’s also a great time of year to take a fresh look at your at-home oral hygiene routine. Nothing affects your self-esteem more than your smile, and one of the most important steps you can take to maintain a healthy and bright smile is by following a regular oral hygiene routine at home each and every day. Here are some ways to refresh that routine this spring:
- Buy a new toothbrush. Or, if you use an electric brush, buy a new brush head. This can make a huge difference in how effective your daily oral hygiene routine is. Ideally, we should all be changing out our toothbrushes and/or brush heads every few months, but it’s easy to forget the last time you did. So the start of spring can be a great reminder to follow through on this important step.
- Promise yourself to floss every day. If your flossing routine is hit or miss, spring is an excellent time to recommit to this vital step in your daily routine. No matter how diligent you might be about brushing your teeth, you’ll never get all the leftover food particles out from between your teeth without flossing. Once a day is necessary, but more than once a day is even better.
- Watch what you drink. You may have heard recent news reports about how bad sugary sodas are for your overall health. But that’s not all – they’re also terrible for your teeth and gums. The combination of sugar, artificial flavors, and carbonation in soda greatly increases your risk of developing tooth decay. If you’re in the habit of drinking sodas often – even if it’s just one a day – spring is a great time to commit to changing that bad habit. Your oral and overall health will benefit so much from this one simple change!
- Schedule your dental visits. If you haven’t already done so, the beginning of spring is an excellent time to schedule your dental visits for the year. Unless your dentist has recommended that you visit the office more often, you should plan for two appointments during the year for professional exams and cleanings.
The start of spring is such a wonderful time of year to clean and organize your home and/or business. It’s also a great time to refresh your at-home oral hygiene routine and schedule dental appointments for the coming 12 months. Your health teeth and gums, and your beautiful smile, will make it all worthwhile!
