Mouthwash is great for keeping bad breath at bay–but did you know it also aids against plaque, gingivitis, and cavities? With all the different products out there today, finding the one that is right for you could prove to be a daunting nightmare–that’s why this list is here to recommend a few tips concerning what you should look for in a mouthwash.
Alcohol-Based Mouthwash
Alcohol-based mouthwashes can rid the mouth of germs and certain viruses. One major problem some people encounter with these types of mouthwashes is their propensity to dry out the mouth (this can be especially egregious if you already experience problems due to dry mouth). If you are experiencing this sort of issue, one potential remedy that is also great for the kids is to switch to an alcohol-free mouthwash. Alcohol-free mouthwashes are particularly great for kids, especially if they should accidentally swallow some of the mouthwash.
Fluoride Mouthwash
Fluoride is an excellent way to shield your enamel and great for oral hygiene, especially if you are prone to cavities. It is a strong preventative measure against cavities because it forms a protective layer around the teeth that guards against the bacteria that cause them. In addition to minimizing your chances of getting cavities, using a little fluoride mouthwash in your daily routine should help keep your teeth strong.
Antibacterial Mouthwash
Anti-bacterial mouthwashes contain specific ingredients that make them especially suited to combat gum disease and a variety of oral infections. While many mouthwashes do have some antibacterial compounds, some are specifically made to treat infections. However, it is important to note that this in no way implies that antibacterial mouthwash will cure the infection–the best route to that determination is through talking to your dentist in order to determine the best treatment plan and course of action.
Despite all the confusion with so many different types of mouthwashes, it is important to remember that the mouth is a warm, wet place where bacteria thrive. The addition of any of the above mouthwashes (albeit with the proper considerations in the case of the alcohol-based mouthwash) to your daily oral hygiene routine can only benefit your oral health (and your breath of course!). In fact, if you are not already using mouthwash, it may be best to experiment with all three of the above recommendations in order to determine which one suits you best.
